Today I ventured out in the snowy cold weather, but it was well worth it! The vintage wooden spools are for a shadow box im working on.

I went out today with the express intention to buy a few seeds, came home with:
Two types of green onion, peas, eggplant, lettuces, summer squash, artichokes, parsely, brussel sprouts, green beans and cardinal climber and love in a puff for fun.

I plan to recycle an old gutter by fastening it to the top of the garden fence, fill it with dirt and the climbing flower vines.

Have started all the tomatoes, peppers and lettuce seeds in the front window (Southern exposure) I've been waiting for some to start sprouting. Here is a pic of the lettuce popping up and some basil, hyacinth and kalanchoe house plants.

Decoupage'n the craft cabinet

Gram left behind an awesome little galvanized metal cabinet, it had 5 layers of peeling paint and had rusted, I could either repaint, or hot dip or repaint and decoupage it. I had never tried the later so it was a new craft to learn. One important tip, roll your fabric a few times after application, air bubbles will appear out of thin air and expect them they seem to be inevitable. This little beauty will be going into the laundry room for table linens and things.

"Pretzel Stable"

Here is a photo of some of the things that came out of the kitchen today, not in the mood to make an enormous (or even a tiny) batch of gingerbread dough - opted for pretzels instead and made this "gingerbread house" with a camper in the back on top of a candy floor cookie forest. Im looking forward to the weekend festivities and all the stops we will make along the way. Santa comes in 2 days and I'll still hope for that aerogarden or worm farm...a girl can always hope ; )

Finally we have a little dusting of snow here in Chicago. This is our 1st snow of the season, a little later than usual, but we'll take it. This winter has been so mild with temps in the 40-50s that we took Belle out for Thanksgiving. It was an absolute blast....then again Ive never had a bad camp trip.

It will be so hard to send this one off in the mail as it was the 1st quilt where I actually shopped for a themed fabric at fabric shops as well as used all my favorite scraps in reds and tans. This was made for a little cousin on her Birthday. I hope she loves it as much as I do!

Its 40 degrees out here in Chicago and super windy, putting up the outdoor Christmas lights is on the back burner today so I finished the cowgirl quilt top...working on the back and binding today.

Chicken soup in the crock pot....oh yeah, I feel a Midwest winter coming on soon.

Here is my drawing of the 2012 Le'Cabbage Patch. Next year I plan on only growing 1 new veg, not 20. Im sticking with the vegetables that we eat and no more trials. I have been collecting bricks and will build a path down the middle. I have also built a compost bin that should yield some deliciously black soil by springtime to kick around before we till. So excited for seed catalogs to come in the mail and to start seeds indoors and its wayyyy to early for that!

Harvested a few more squash today and more garden clean-up. The compost bin needs to settle a bit before I can add more to it. Dill, parsely, sage, onions, chives and 2 cabbages are left to grow. I will try to rake out a small patch to plant something....I have not thought what to plant yet to grow into winter.

November has started out with lots of garden work, but really work in the garden is playtime for me ; )

For the past month or so I had been looking out between camp trips at the Le'Cabbage thinking "I got to get out there and pull everything" and trips came and went and today I had changed out the toilet so I was feeling a little bit "Wonder Woman".

I pulled the broccoli (or rather cut its 2" stalks with loppers) and everything else but some carrots, tomatoes and a few herbs. The compost bin is beautifully brimming and looks so pretty and neat with all its contents arranged within a green wire corral. This is actually the 1st time I have ever pulled the garden before winter, I usually leave all the crops lay until spring then pull them. Im eager to see which way is better. I do like the way the garden looks this way, so neat and tidy.

This year was an extreme year of camping for our family, we must have gone out with Belle (our vintage Airstream) at least 12-15 times. We will be taking her out again to do some winter camping in the snow this year yet too. Here are a few pics:

Hot time in the Summertime

Its been hot and very dry here in Chicago. The rain barrels have been empty for about 3 weeks - at least. I have had to use city water to water a few newly transplanted trees and shrubs but have not watered the garden very much. So far we have harvested:

6 zucchini
2 tomatoes
6 C. of green beans
6 radishes
20 carrots
green onions, chives
dill, cilantro, lemon balm

I saw one spaghetti squash hiding in the leaves about 8" around.

We picked our first harvest of 2011 from the garden last night!
Radishes, lettuce, chive blossoms, dill, chervil and cilantro, the makings of a super duper salad! I must admit - not a chervil fan, it tastes like garlic parsely but has a scent of anise.

Pictured above are some shots from yesterdays Raku Workshop, did we have fun or what! I made an Airstream birdhouse to resemble Belle (would you expect anything less?), I will mount it on a 4 x 4 mailbox post for the garden. She was made by hand in a 3 hour class using my entire allotted clay - a 12.5lb bag! Will post pics after its assembled and mounted! wooohoooo!

Im joining up in the Bloggers Quilt Festival this Spring! This quilt I am especially proud of, a king sized "postage stamp" quilt. The greatest trick I learned is to iron toward the colored pieces so that when you join them the seams "seat" making the perfect intersections!

Garden Update: Mothers Day Edition

Planted Today, May 8th: cherry vine tomatoes, salad greens, spaghetti squash, zuccini, acorn squash, sweet corn, pumpkins, and melrose peppers and a red putunia at the end of each row along the path.

Previosly planted: dill, sweet peas, poppies, cow peas, carrots, onions, chervil, cabbage, brocolli raab, brocolli-flour and green beans

Spring has sprung here in Chicago!

Spring is sure in full bloom here in Chicago! The Rhodies, Serviceberry, Tulips, Daffs and Grape Muscari by the front door really add some happy color don't they? I was able to have a few hours in the garden today to spread the grass clippings between the rows. The entire West (left) side of Le'Cabbage Patch is planted with peas, radishes, c

abbage, brocc, cauli, carrots, onions, chives, dill and chervil. I also drove a few stakes in the ground and attached green plastic mesh to grow the tomatoes on - a sort of "tomato fence". I noticed on the East side of the garden there are volunteer carrots, parsely and other herbs popping up all over the place. I dont have the heart to rip out anything that is living so Ill keep an eye on it and let it grow wherever it is. I have quite a few trees I need to move but cannot due to the high winds, they will have to wait. Next weekend I will plant hot crops (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant (seeds), zucchini (seeds), corn (seed), pumpkins (seed) and other squashes. It will be a very busy Mother's Day weekend!

Ive been experimenting with a new header on the ol'bloggy, what do ya think?

PS Rain rain go away, it's been raining every day for a few weeks now, the garden is sprouting a few stickers and its too muddy to go and pluck them out! When it dries up enough to mow I will make the pathways with the fresh grass clippings and that will keep the weeds from sprouting any further.

Today I had a nice time out in the garden, it was 85 here in Chicago, I laid down this granite threshold, while the hubs installed all three rain barrels to the gutter downspouts,

Radishes planted today! (one row) The row markers are mini-blinds cut to 12", one side is

poked into the ground up thru the seed packet then folded over and stuck back into the soil, this way the

seed packets wont blow off in a storm,

Two rows of St. Valcary carrots, they came free with last years

order of seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co.,

Here is an aerial pic of the work today,

One row of Cow Peas went in along the fence,

and last but not least a new compost bin made from more fence material. The

greatest accomplishment was that the garden is "planting-ready" for the season. Phewwww!

We finally got around to installing the arbor! It was on the honey do list for a week or two, its still cold out so I was not expecting it to go in...but its in! wooo hooo!

I will paint it one more coat of black and transplant the purple leaf grape and some other lightweight vine onto it when it warms up....whenever that will be they are predicting another week of 30's here.

oh... and the garden finally has a name! Le' Cabbage Patch.

Earth Day April 22nd! - Giveaway!

Earth Day this year is April 22nd.

We have been trying to live sustainable over here in the Garden Patch. The garden has been rolling along now for three years. I have to say the best addition so far has been the 3 - 50 Gal Rain barrells. We have not used city water for the garden since we installed them in 2009 and that has saved on our water bill tremendously. We purchased the rain barrells for about $50 each and I painted them in a few themes.

I had a small wall that needed some sprucing up after some new paint. I had three old wood frames, I painted them one coat of black and stretched a leftover quilt block into each of them. I think it turned out pretty neat!

Here is the $13 greenhouse from LTD Commodities on sale, I have just put it out there on the deck, wish I had a remote temp gauge to tell me how hot its getting. The outside temp is only 30 degrees during the days here in Chicago, we are waiting for spring - only 3 more weeks!

I was eating a super apple - either Honeycrisp or a Jazz and saved the seeds, planted them in a cup January 1st and just noticed one out of three sprouted!

February 15th Sprout Status

I moved the sprout cart to the front South window instead of the East window for a change to see if I can get the peppers and eggplant to sprout. I have been pinching the tomatoes back to the first three leaves to keep them small and strong. I stared more onions yesterday and basil. We have had one salad so far from the tray of micro salad greens and it was great! Its thawing here now with a week of 40 - 50 degree temps all the snow should be gone by weeks end! Which reminds me I've got to get to that broken piece of plexi on the cold frame that the hawk broke.

Postage Stamp Quilt all done!

You don't know how happy I am to have this one done! Its 8' x 8'. One side is postage stamp sized squares and the back side is all strips of fabrics pieced together, I love both sides! For this quilt all my fabrics were bought from Connecting Threads line called Cheep Talk, there are tiny little birds on most of the fabrics used. Here are pictures of the snowstorm we had Tuesday-Wednesday, it really rocked Chicago with 24" but the wind gusts were 30-50mph, you know what that means - DRIFTING!

Nothing us Midwesterners cannot handle, we come from tuff stock!

Today I saw a hawk looking for his breakfast in the backyard, a pretty little cardinal and sat at the machine a wee bit in between the BEARS game. I got to get out for an hour before the game to pick up a rotary cutter and a quick cuts template ruler. The lady at Joann Fabrics refused to accept my coupon as it expired yesterday so I couldn't buy the cutting mat today. I found an old piece of wood in the basement to cut on instead.

Sorry for the lack of posts this early into the New Year, my Nikon went into the shop a week ago, they said 2-3 weeks guys. The sprouts are now 2" tall in the window, everything is up except the eggplant and peppers, but they always take their sweet time! Its snowing now, 4" predicted, will we finally get to use the new sleds that Santa brought? Stay tuned, when the camera comes back I will have a new post a day for a week!

Picnic Tablecloth and Placemats

I have been doing a lot of dreaming about camping lately. One thing I never have when camping is a nice sturdy, thick, heavy, tablecloth for the campsite picnic table. I looked through my stash (which is getting pretty low) and found some old red window valences from the kitchen that I saved (who knows why-they are faded) and some yellow floral canvas fabric. I distinctly remember this yellow floral in my Grandparents camper "The Gypsy Wagon", she used it to make pillows and curtains. Back then I remember not being too fond of it, but now it fits the vintage theme I am trying to recreate. This set will stay in the camper so we always will have a tablecloth!

January lettuce sprouts!

Seeds started in the window so far: Lettuce, Dill, Chervil, Basil, Parsley, Onions, Peppers, Geraniums, Tomatoes and Spinach. I realize its a bit early but we wanted to eat lettuce this winter so that is why I started so much lettuce.

Today was a very big day, I had one thing on my mind and that was to get ready for the new year and the new garden. 1st Thing was to take all the Christmas stuff down and pack it away and that includes the tree, its going to go outside in the yard for the wild life to enjoy for a few more winter months. It still had the dehydrated orange slices hung on it and I will also hang a few wild bird ornaments on too (pine cones spread with peanut butter etc.).

2nd on the agenda was to dig out the steel wire cart I had out in the garage, it was buried in there for the past 10 years, piled with junk. I cleared away the stuff, threw out and recycled 3 bags of debris and this is the end result, a primo seed starting area! The front windows face south-southwest, I have been having very good luck starting seeds here each year and I'm so thankful for that sun exposure!

3rd Was to wash all the trays. I had asked my Mom to save me some of her plant trays last year and she sure did! I know you are supposed to sterilize all your seed containers but I just rinsed them off with the hottest water I could tolerate and that is the extent of time spent on that. Mom also saved the markers for the plants so I washed them and will paint them white that way I can reuse them for marking the sprouts. After I fill the trays with soil I will post again the progress. The soil I will use is the Moisture Control type, as it retains water longer and its better for the seedling to never dry out.

Weave Quilt Complete!

This quilt I named "Tabitha".

Touted to be an easy quilt, this weave quilt was much more difficult than it looks. I really like its character as more of an Artsy quilt than a traditional quilt from yesteryear.

I always wanted to make a weave quilt, I started one a few days ago, I'm 80% done with the quilt top now and I cannot wait to get it basted and the binding on so I can wash it. I think that's the secret to these type quilts. The ends are not folded over and ironed and each strip is not appliqued, its just sewn on, leaving the edges raw.

Gosh I hope this turns out!! Ill post pics as I go!
